Grammar rules
We use There is … and There are … to express that something or someone exists (or does not exist).
There is a supermarket in the village. (More natural than: A Supermarket is in the village.)
Use there is when a singular noun follows.
There is a fox in our garden.

Use there are when a plural noun follows.
There are a lot of birds in the park.
There are not any teachers in the classroom.
