An action that was completed recently and has implications for the present → Present Perfect

An unfinished, ongoing action at a point in the past (at that time) → Past Progressive

Rachel has visited the island before. This is the second time.

An experience that someone has had at some point in their life → Present Perfect

I don´t think that the test next week will be easy.

We use the future simple (will future) for statements about the future that are based on our own opinion or belief.

There was a lot of rain yesterday, but today the sun is shining.

An action taking place at the time of speaking or around that time → Present Progressive

His brother has lived in this house since June.

We use the present perfect – not the simple present – for an action or situation that began in the past and continues into the present (since June).

Everybody seems to be angry today.

The state verb seem cannot be used in a progressive tense.

He was drinking a cup of tea when suddenly all the lights went out.

An ongoing, unfinished action in the past, interrupted by a shorter action (the lights went out) → Past Progressive

Leo goes jogging with his three dogs every evening.

An action that occurs regularly in the present (every evening) → Simple Present

It´s our favourite film. We have seen it six times.

An experience we have had at some point in our lives → Present Perfect

They got off the train half an hour ago.

A completed action in the past with a past time marker (half an hour ago) → Simple Past
