Exercise: Present Tenses - Going to Future - Simple Past

My uncle is in his mountain hut at the moment. He drives there every weekend.

Regular action  or habit → Simple present

They are going to build a new gym next summer.

Prediction for the future (next summer) – often with signs that are already apparent → Going to future

Frank is moving to a new house right now.

Action at the time of speaking or around the time of speaking (right now) → Present progressive

We are going to see lions and tigers at the zoo tomorrow.

Intention or prediction for the future (tomorrow) → Going to future

The princess lived in a beautiful castle when she was young.

Completed action in the past with a past time marker (when she was young) → Simple past

The simple past is the most common tense used in stories and narratives.

These are my classmates. I like all of them.

Permanent state in the present (we do not expect any rapid change) → Simple present

The cat usually sleeps in the living room, but now it is sleeping in the garden.

Action at the time of speaking or around the time of speaking (now) → Present progressive

Charlotte bought a new garden table two days ago.

Completed action in the past with a past time marker (two days ago) → Simple past

New technology is going to change our lives in the future.

Predictions for the future (next summer) – often with signs that are already apparent → Going to future

He is Chinese, but he speaks English very well.

Permanent state in the present → Simple present

Listen! Somebody is crying for help.

Action at the time of speaking or around the time of speaking (Listen!) → Present progressive

All of my friends enjoyed the party last week.

Completed action in the past with a past time marker (last week) → Simple past

Note:

The present progressive can also be used to talk about the future in certain circumstances, but only for personal plans, not for general predictions or events over which we have no control.
