In the third person singular (he, she, it, the girl, a car …), the form of the simple present changes in English:

• For most verbs, -s is added to the base form.

drink → drinks

like → likes

• For verbs ending in -ch, -s, -sh or -x, the ending -es is added.

push → pushes

teach → teaches

watch → watches

• For verbs ending in a consonant (b, c, d, f …) and -y, the third-person singular form is formed with the ending -ies.

try → tries

carry → carries

• Note the exceptions:

go → goes

do → does

have → has

• The verb to be is the only verb in the simple present tense that has three forms.

I am

you/we/they are

he/she/it is

For all other grammatical persons, the simple present has the same form as the infinitive (base form).

I dance

you say

we come

they learn
